CONSTRUCTION STALLED ON NEW ORTEGA LIBRARY - Make Your Voice Heard!

CONSTRUCTION STALLED:
After our inspiring groundbreaking ceremony, with enthusiastic community involvement, a permit appeal was filed to stop demolition of the existing library and halt the building of the new branch library. We had hoped to complete the demolition of the old building before school starts, but we now have to wait. This delay could jeopardize the construction of the much needed, new, larger library for our community.

BOARD OF APPEALS HEARING:
The Public can show support for the new library at the Board of Appeals hearing on Wednesday, August 5th at 5:00pm at City Hall, Room 416. All members of the public are urged to attend. In addition, the public may write in support of the new library to the Board of Appeals, 1650 Mission Street, Room 304, San Francisco, CA 94103. Please send copies to BLIP at: BLIP@sfpl.org, fax 415-557-4427, or 190 Ninth St. SF, CA 94103 or no later than July 29th.

VISION FOR OUR NEW LIBRARY:
The new library was designed with input from the community at planning meetings, beginning in 2003. The new 9,000-square-foot branch will be seismically safe, closer to Ortega Street for added visibility and safety of patrons, and designed to better meet the needs of the nearby schools and surrounding neighborhood. It will feature the largest Program Room outside the Main Library, with after-hours community access, a large reading area, distinct spaces for Teens and Children, a custom Play-to-Learn area for young children and their families, a study room, views of the ocean, public art, a living green roof, new furniture, and space for more books and materials.
