Ortega Branch is coming down

There's No Stopping Us Now!

The appeal to halt the demolition of the old Ortega Branch Library was denied! Thanks to you all for your letters and support. We’ve been given go ahead to move forward with demolition and construction of our new library!

The crew is here, daily, now, preparing the site for demolition. The first step was to cover the mural that runs along the wall facing Ortega Street. The next step is to build a fence surrounding the demolition area. Once that is completed, Mini Ortega will close, temporarily, for approximately 4-6 weeks for demolition. As soon as we know the exact closure dates, we’ll let you know. Once demolition is completed, Mini Ortega plans reopen and stay open for business as usual, until the newly constructed Ortega Library opens in late 2010.

The Bookmobile will visit the neighborhood Fridays from 10 AM-2PM during the demolition closure period. You will be able to pick up your reserves, place reserves and return library materials to the bookmobile. If this Friday morning schedule time proves inconvenient for you, you might consider transferring your holds to a different branch location before closure, or wait until we reopen, as we plan to extend the holds for reserves at Mini Ortega for an additional two weeks.

During the first 2 weeks of closure, storytimes will not be held. After the first 2 weeks, storytimes will be held on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM at Sunset Ministry, 3010 Noriega Street, until Mini Ortega reopens.

If you have any questions, please call (415) 557-4353 or visit our blog for the latest information:

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, but promise our brand new Ortega Branch Library will be worth the trouble and the wait!

After our inspiring groundbreaking ceremony, with enthusiastic community involvement, a permit appeal was filed to stop demolition of the existing library and halt the building of the new branch library. We had hoped to complete the demolition of the old building before school starts, but we now have to wait. This delay could jeopardize the construction of the much needed, new, larger library for our community.

The Public can show support for the new library at the Board of Appeals hearing on Wednesday, August 5th at 5:00pm at City Hall, Room 416. All members of the public are urged to attend. In addition, the public may write in support of the new library to the Board of Appeals, 1650 Mission Street, Room 304, San Francisco, CA 94103. Please send copies to BLIP at:, fax 415-557-4427, or 190 Ninth St. SF, CA 94103 or no later than July 29th.

The new library was designed with input from the community at planning meetings, beginning in 2003. The new 9,000-square-foot branch will be seismically safe, closer to Ortega Street for added visibility and safety of patrons, and designed to better meet the needs of the nearby schools and surrounding neighborhood. It will feature the largest Program Room outside the Main Library, with after-hours community access, a large reading area, distinct spaces for Teens and Children, a custom Play-to-Learn area for young children and their families, a study room, views of the ocean, public art, a living green roof, new furniture, and space for more books and materials.

Update, Update!

Dear Ortega Library Kids and Your Families,

Big changes are about to happen at Ortega Library.
The Good News is we are going to build a brand new library!
The bad news is on May 9, 2009, our old library will close its doors forever.

The Good News
is we will be opening a temporary Mini-Ortega Library on the premises!
The bad news is Mini-Ortega Library is going to be very, very, very, small.

You will no longer be able to come into the library to do your homework after school. There will be no
tables, no chairs for you to sit. We will still be here to help you with your school assignments; any way we can, but keep in mind, it’s such a small space, our resources will be limited.

Your days of procrastination are over! No more waiting until the last minute to come in and get the books
you need to fulfill your assignments the day before they’re due! Start planning ahead! If you come into the library, call the library, or go online to reserve your books as soon as your homework is assigned, you’ll do just fine. Remember, it takes about 3 days to a week for your books to arrive from another branch library.

Our Summer Reading Program will go on, as usual, as best we can this summer, but there are going to be a
few weeks when the temporary site is scheduled to close during the demolition of the old library. Our library on wheels, the Bookmobile, plans to visit twice a week while we’re closed. We’re not sure exactly when the demolition will take place, but we will let you know as soon as we know and give you more information about bookmobile days and times during this brief closure.

Remember these dates:

May 9 Ortega Library Closure. May 16 Mini-Ortega Library Opens.

Mini-Ortega Library Hours:
Sun 1-6, Mon 10-6, Tue 10-6, Wed 1-9, Thu 1-9, Fri 1-6, Sat 10-6
If you have any questions, please call 355-5700.
